UMD Replacement Kit

January 17th, 2008 by

umd.jpgIf any of you have ever had experiences with broken UMDs you already know how frustrating it can be to shell out 30-50 dollars for a new game. Thankfully, now there is a better solution. When Sony came out with the UMD (Universal Media Disc) it was certainly a big risk being the first company to invest in optimal discs for portable gaming. The UMD disc can hold 1.8 Gigabytes of data, putting it on par with some DVDs. The UMD disc also unfortunately comes in a pretty un-solid case, but then again no number of engineers could ever predict the many ways users might find to damage their products. Alas, many gamers have left their UMD cases lying around the house only to find their dog decided it would be a tasty snack, or to hear the dreaded crunching sound underfoot of a cracking UMD case.

With this in mind, a company called Multimedia Recovery (or MMR) decided to create a UMD replacement case, after already having repaired 70,000 of them beforehand. A simple device that probably should have already been released by Sony , it’s exactly what you’d expect, a plastic UMD case that opens up and easily snaps back in place. It comes in multiple colors if you’re one of those that likes to add a little style to your gaming hardware, and it is easy to use and re-use. Another advantage these plastic covers have is that they are much much stronger than Sony’s retail packaging and reuseable, since these kits come in packs of anywhere from 3 to 250 you may want to save yourself the trouble and replace all of your UMDs in one shot.

These UMD packs will run you $3.99 for one and $12.99 for a pack of three, as well as the screws you may use to seal the UMD. If you need more than that make sure to visit MMRs Products Page for pricing. Below I’ve posted the video from their website that demostrates the use of this product. Overall I think these cases will definately get you more life out of your UMDs and even bring some back from the dead for you (provided they didn’t end up in the trash already). Post any experiences you have had with UMDs or these new cases good or bad, I’d love to read about them!

I had trouble with my older brother stepping on my UMDs… I decided to invest in a couple of these cases. Not a bad thing to own.
