Skype and GPS functionality coming to the PSP in North America

We have some great news for American PSP owners, courtesy of two recent announcements by Sony. First, it turns out that the company will be bringing Skype functionality to the PSP on this continent, following the successful implementation of a similar system in Britain. Unfortunately, the software will be limited to those with the new PSP-2000 model, probably due to its larger on-board memory. This is the first case of differences between firmware versions for the new and older models of the PSP, although there has been some speculation that we will see more of these slim PSP exclusives as time goes on.
The second bit of news involves the much-anticipated GPS functionality. While this system was widely touted by Sony at the launch of the device, it has taken them more than a year to finally bring the attachment and software out of Japan. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Japanese beta testers, however, we can be assured of a quality product with lots of great features. In their announcement today, the company stated that software would include all sorts of useful navigation tools, including some snazzy 3D views and downloadable city guides.

Indeed; it appears Skype on PSP will offer free PSP-to-PSP and PSP-to-PC calls, plus an available dedicated phone number for about $10 a month for the first three months. That sounds pretty good to me.
And GPS? Now I just have to get a PSP. Sorry DS; you’re gonna have to live close to your arch enemy very soon…

Yeah, but the thing I like about my cell phone is that it works even when I am not close to a wifi hotspot. And how annoying would those get (especially the locked ones) if you needed them to make calls!
